elf Holiday 2012 Nail Polish Cube Set, Review & Swatches!

elf Holiday 2012 Nail Polish Cube Set
$10-Limited Edition

Hey everyone! Today I have a review and swatches for one of the nail polish sets elf has brought out for the holiday season! This is a very picture heavy post, so keep reading for all the details!

So there's 14 polishes for $10 in this set, and each polish is about half the size of a regular elf polish which retails for $2 each. So, 14 nails polishes are worth about a $1 each since they're half sized, so you're really saving about $4 dollars with this set. Not bad!

Size comparisons-full size on the right & limited edition size on the left
You get a really nice range of colors in this set, which is great, because there's something for everyone. I did notice that this set is a bit heavier on the taupe family.

So without further ado, here's close up pictures of the bottles, and I'll have the reviews of each color at the end!

*I am missing a picture of Desert Haze so as soon as I can get it snapped & edited I will add it*

BLUSHING BEAUTY

CHERRY BOMB

CHIC CONFETTI

DAZZLE DIVA

GLAMOUR GIRL

GOLD STAR

GREEN MACHINE

MISTY HAZE

RED-Y OR NOT

SEA ESCAPE

SMOKY BROWN (I am aware this is mispelled, it's what it says on the label)

TAUPE OF THE WORLD

VIOLET VELVET

And swatches with two coats:

LEFT TO RIGHT: RED-Y OR NOT, CHERRY BOMB, VIOLET VELVET, CHIC CONFETTI, GOLD STAR

L-R: BLUSHING BEAUTY, GLAMOUR GIRL, SMOKY BROWN, TAUPE OF THE WORLD, DESERT HAZE

L-R: GREEN, MISTY HAZE, DAZZLE DIVA, SEA ESCAPE
So now that you've seen all the lovely swatches, here are my thoughts on each individual shade:
RED-Y OR NOT: semi-opaque with 2 coats, fine shimmer, stains nail a bit, much lighter on nail than in bottle
CHERRY BOMB: jelly texture, semi-opaque with 2 coats, much lighter on nail than in bottle
VIOLET VELVET: beautiful purple with red & blue duo chrome, requires 3 coats
CHIC CONFETTI: very thick and gloopy, requires lots of coats to get the glitter to adhere
GOLD STAR: smells really bad, very gloopy, takes a long time to dry

BLUSHING BEAUTY: nearly opaque with 1 coat, beautiful metallic finish
GLAMOUR GIRL: beautiful taupe with gold shimmer, requires at least 2 coats
SMOKY BROWN: almost opaque with 1 coat
TAUPE OF THE WORLD: slightly lighter than Smoky Brown, 2 coats for full opaqueness
DESERT HAZE: strange milky gray color, requires at least 2 coats

GREEN MACHINE: nearly opaque with 1 coat
MIST HAZE: true cream gray, nearly opaque with 1 coat
DAZZLE DIVA: as if Club by MAC was an eyeshadow, beautiful shimmery green, purple, brown duo chrome. Slightly sheerer than the rest
SEA ESCAPE: On the nails it's just a black with a subtle turquoise shimmer. Not nearly as pretty as the bottle

There's some colors in this set that are very similar to the Hunger Games collection by China Glaze! Glamour Girl & Sea Escape!

So would I recommend this collection? Yes. I think it's a great present, especially at just $10 for any nail polish lover!

The Bottom Line
8.5/10
I love this set, but I just wish that the glitters weren't so thick and unusable. Other than that, this set would be fantastic!

What do you think? Will you be buying this set?

  6. "Smoky" isn't misspelled, that's the proper spelling for the adjective :) Only Smokey the bear and other names are spelled with an e. Thank you for the photos, they look great!
